Comparing Traditional and Implant-Supported Dentures

Sep 11 • 2 minute read

Patients who need a full denture have two options from our practice: a traditional full denture and a complete denture supported by dental implants. Classic dentures and their implant-supported counterparts each have their particular advantages that could help decide which treatment is best for you. Knowing these advantages and having an honest conversation about them with our team of dentists will make sure your new smile is the exact one you need.

Cost

Certain forms of restorative dental care are more affordable than others. Knowing how your dental insurance covers each procedure and how much you will have to pay out of pocket afterward may be a key concern behind the decision you make for your dental care.

Traditional complete dentures are more affordable. Dentures are inherently less expensive because there are fewer costs to its fabrication and application. Implant-supported complete dentures require precise attachments and more time to fabricate. This results in higher fees.

Surgical Availability

The first step to getting any dental implant restoration, including dentures, is to have the dental implant posts surgically added to the smile. This stage of treatment requires nearly 6 months of healing time before a denture can be supported by the implants. As effective as dental implants are at restoring dental function and beauty, not everyone is healthy or comfortable enough to undergo this surgical care. If you cannot have the surgery necessary to get an implant-supported denture, then a traditional denture is going to be the best treatment.

Bite

The main reason many patients prefer dental implants, cost and treatment considered, is that they increase the function of your bite. Dental implant posts, which are surgically placed into the gums, are a set of artificial tooth roots that hold the restoration in place. This means that your new dentures are almost as effective at chewing food, and can be used in a more similar way to your original teeth. Traditional dentures are not as effective because they rely solely on your gums for support; they tend to slip and slide, reducing their effectiveness for chewing food.

Comprehensive Restoration

Traditional dentures can replace your teeth, but they do not affect jaw bone resorption, a common side-effect of losing teeth. Over years without tooth roots, the jawbone shrinks and becomes more brittle. Dental implants, on the other hand, give the jaw replacement roots to support and prevent resorption. This ensures your ability to eat and chew for a lifetime.
